Alice Kovalevsky | Painting
Alice Kovalevsky (b. 2003, Chicago, IL) is an abstract painter whose work focuses on blending staining techniques with sculptural forms. Her practice is process-driven, balancing spontaneity and control. She uses coffee, ink, and paint to stain sheets of raw canvas that are molded into sculptural artworks. Influenced by Color Field and Abstract Expressionism, Kovalevsky’s work offers a visual and spatial experience. She currently lives and works in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Alice Kovalevsky creates hazy and diffused abstractions using ink, coffee, and paint to stain sheets of raw canvas. Sometimes, the paint/ink/coffee concoctions are left to sit and sink naturally; other times, the canvas is shifted to guide their flow. She manipulates form and materiality by tearing, absorbing, spreading, and stretching. Canvases are folded to create sculptural artworks that wrap around gallery walls. Her work is process-driven, tactile, and spatially aware. The ambiguous stains and sculptural forms that make up her work invite viewers to move around the space to see the work from different perspectives.
