Hilda is a self-taught photographer living in Uppsala, Sweden. She has just, in the recent year, started to take the next step in showcasing her work for an audience. She has taken part in a few exhibitions in Uppsala, as well as having her photos exhibited in a photography magazine called docu magazine.

First, introduce yourself to our readers. You are a self-taught photographer; how did you first get interested in this medium? And why did you decide to be a photographer in the first place?
My journey into the realm of photography began organically. I am a self-taught photographer, and my initial foray into photography can be traced back to a moment when I received my first digital camera as a thoughtful gift from my aunt.
The digital camera became a gateway; it was a medium through which I found a unique voice, a means to articulate my perception of the world and share it with others.
Photography, for me, transcended mere documentation; it became a medium for storytelling, a way to encapsulate emotions, and a vehicle for self-expression. Over time, the pursuit of this passion led to a deeper commitment to honing my skills, understanding the nuances of composition, and exploring the boundless possibilities inherent in the art of photography.
The decision to be a photographer was, in retrospect, an intuitive response to the intrinsic connection I felt with the medium—an avenue through which I could convey the beauty and significance I found in the world through my own unique perspective.
What is your background, and how did you develop into the artist you are today?
I am currently pursuing a legal education as a law student in the city of Uppsala, Sweden. Despite my immersion in the field of law, my creative pursuits have manifested through my passion for photography, a hobby that has gradually evolved into a significant aspect of my identity.
The development of my artistic identity has been an organic process, spurred by a genuine desire to refine my skills and capture increasingly compelling images. From the early stages of experimenting with composition and lighting to the more nuanced exploration of storytelling and narrative within my photographs, each step has been a deliberate effort to elevate my craft.
The pursuit of taking "better and better photos" has been the driving force behind my artistic development. This journey has involved not only technical refinement but also a deepening understanding of the emotional and conceptual dimensions inherent in visual storytelling.
As I navigate the dual worlds of law and art, I find inspiration in the diverse landscapes and cultural nuances of my life as a student, as well as the city's rich history and dynamic environment. This provides a backdrop that fuels my artistic exploration, influencing the subjects I choose and the stories I aim to convey through my lens.

What is your aim as an artist? And how would you define yourself as an artist today?
At this point in my artistic journey, my primary aim is a deliberate shift from regarding photography as a mere hobby to actively pursuing its elevation into a public sphere. As I embark on this transition, my immediate goal is to expand the visibility of my work, cultivating a broader audience and, by extension, establishing myself as a recognized artist within the creative community.
Beyond the confines of a personal hobby, my aim is to contribute meaningfully to the larger narrative of contemporary art. This involves not only sharing my visual stories but also engaging with the diverse perspectives and interpretations that a wider audience brings to my work.
In practical terms, this transition involves a strategic approach to presenting my portfolio, leveraging various platforms, exhibitions, and collaborations to showcase the evolution of my artistic vision. Let's talk about your work. You work primarily with street photography; what inspired you to follow this route? And why did you choose street photography specifically?
The allure of street photography, for me, lies in its capacity to encapsulate the authenticity and vibrancy of everyday life. What inspired me to traverse this path was a profound fascination with the unscripted narratives that unfold on the streets, revealing the diverse tapestry of human experiences.
What messages were you trying to convey to the viewers with your images?
During the process of capturing these images, my initial intent was rooted in an instinctual appreciation for captivating expressions, intriguing environments, or compelling play of light. At the time, the act of photography was driven by a spontaneous attraction to the visual elements that unfolded before my lens without a preconceived message or narrative.
However, upon reflection and closer examination of the amassed collection, a discernible pattern and narrative emerged. Notably, a common thread wove through most of the images, wherein individuals were engrossed in various activities.
The messages encapsulated within these images articulate a commentary on the beauty found in ordinary, everyday pursuits. The subjects, oblivious to the observer, reflect a genuine and unfiltered connection with their surroundings. By capturing these moments of absorption, the images communicate a shared human experience of finding fascination and significance in the ostensibly mundane aspects of life.
In summary, the images, initially captured without a predetermined message, evolved into a visual exploration of the captivating narratives found in the ordinary actions of individuals. The stories that captivate me most are those that unfold organically through the lens, particularly when individuals are immersed in dynamic activities or expressing poignant emotions. The diversity of these narratives is a testament to the multifaceted nature of the human experience.
My inspiration often stems from the rich tapestry of my environment. I find myself drawn to the subtle interplay of light and shadow, the candid moments that reveal unspoken stories, and the emotive energy that permeates any given scene. By closely observing and interpreting my surroundings, I strive to capture the inherent stories waiting to be told.
While my photographic subjects encompass a spectrum of human experiences, I have developed a penchant for portraying people in action. This fascination with portraying genuine, unscripted moments has led me to photograph not only friends and family, but also strangers engaged in everyday activities. Initially met with some resistance from those close to me, my subjects have come to appreciate the authenticity and uniqueness that stem from these unguarded moments.
In the process of photographing people, I am committed to capturing the raw and unfiltered emotions that define a moment. To achieve this, I often reassure my subjects to disregard the presence of the camera, encouraging them to be themselves. This approach not only fosters a sense of comfort but also allows me to document the true essence of their personalities and the situations in which they find themselves.
However, there are instances where I intentionally seek a more direct connection with my subjects. When the narrative calls for it, I may request them to engage with the camera, intentionally breaking the fourth wall. This deliberate interaction serves as a powerful tool to convey specific emotions or to underscore the energy I aim to encapsulate within the frame.
Ultimately, my approach to storytelling through photography is a dynamic and evolving process. It hinges on a delicate balance between observing the world around me, interpreting the narratives that unfold, and orchestrating moments that elicit a profound emotional response from those who engage with my work.
What do you see as the strengths of this project, both visually and conceptually?
The current project I am immersed in revolves around the nuanced exploration of the moments unfolding in my immediate surroundings. Unlike a meticulously planned endeavor, the genesis of this project emerged organically, a retrospective process of curating images that resonated with me after their capture. In essence, it is an authentic documentation of life as it unfolds, devoid of preconceived notions or a predetermined narrative.
Visually, the strength of this project lies in its candid and unfiltered portrayal of moments. The absence of a predefined vision lends itself to a raw authenticity that is both captivating and relatable. The images, captured without the constraints of a predetermined concept, possess a genuine quality that allows viewers to connect with the sincerity of the depicted moments.

You work with both digital and analog photography. What are the main differences in your opinion? And how do these two different techniques influence your work and approach to the subject?
The choice between digital and analog photography depends on the narrative and aesthetic I aim to convey. While digital technology offers immediacy and precision, analog techniques contribute a unique charm and a set of challenges that influence my creative process. Balancing these two approaches allows me to tailor my method to the specific nuances of each project, contributing to a versatile and evolving body of work.
Do you have any new series or projects you are currently working on?
Presently, my artistic endeavors are centered around a dual exploration- My primary focus revolves around delving into the realm of analog photography, recognizing it as an area where I am keen to expand my expertise. This deliberate choice stems from a desire to embrace the tactile and nuanced aspects of film photography, presenting a canvas where each frame demands thoughtful consideration.
Within this broader exploration of analog photography, my specific emphasis lies in capturing the essence of urban life through black and white imagery. This stylistic choice is not only a nod to the timeless aesthetic of classic street photography but also a deliberate foray into the interplay of light, shadows, and the candid moments that define the dynamic pulse of city life. The monochromatic palette allows me to distill scenes to their essential elements, emphasizing contrast and composition as I seek to encapsulate the soul of the streets.
Simultaneously, I am working on a project that diverges from conventional portraiture. In this series, I am intentionally steering away from revealing the faces of my subjects, choosing instead to convey their emotions and expressions through the language of body movement. By focusing on gestures, postures, and the interplay of shadows, I aim to craft a narrative that transcends facial features, delving into the universal language of non-verbal communication. This series becomes an exploration of the profound ways in which individuals convey their inner selves without relying on the traditional canvas of the face.
These concurrent projects underscore my commitment to pushing the boundaries of my artistic expression. The deliberate choice of analog photography serves as a medium to challenge myself technically and aesthetically, while the thematic series with obscured faces delves into a deeper exploration of the nuanced stories that can be told through the universal language of the human body.
As these projects unfold, I am not only refining my technical skills but also delving into the intricacies of storytelling and visual communication. Finally, as we are at the beginning of 2024, what are your goals for this year? And what would you like to achieve?
My aspirations for this year are centered on the continued evolution of my photography, steering it towards a more professional trajectory. The overarching objective is to transcend the boundaries of a personal pursuit and immerse myself in an environment that fosters growth, collaboration, and learning.
In practical terms, this translates into a deliberate pursuit of opportunities that will not only challenge my artistic boundaries but also provide avenues for collaboration with like-minded creatives. I aspire to engage in projects that not only showcase my evolving skills but also contribute meaningfully to a broader creative discourse. The goal is to find a vibrant and nurturing creative environment where I can learn from others, share insights, and collectively elevate the craft.
