INTERVIEW
Let's start talking a little about yourself. What is your personal and artistic background?
I grew up in a quaint coal mining town in northern China, where the vast and picturesque grasslands captivated me, even though resources for hobbies and sports were scarce. It was within this backdrop that I discovered solace, joy, and a sense of comfort through drawing and crafting. In my little imaginary world, I found happiness, building a serene haven that brought me peace and calm. I would fashion little dolls with outfits made from the steppe grass surrounding my family's home. During the winter, I would freeze jeans in playful poses, creating my first fashion art installation in the snow. Looking back, my neighbors may have viewed me as eccentric, but deep within, and a creative fire was ignited, warming my spirit as I drew in the snow.
In my family, it was my father who possessed a natural artistic inclination. He delighted in calligraphy and stamp carving. I have a vivid memory from my first-grade year, when we had a play centered around various animals. My father painted a face mask for me, adorned with Bambi, and I became the coolest kid in class with the most exceptional face mask. This experience left an indelible impression on my young mind, revealing the power of art to evoke emotional connections. Throughout my journey, I never relinquished my passion for crafts and art, even as I pursued a double bachelor's degree in economics and business administration. Every spare moment was dedicated to sketching and self-teaching sewing techniques. The fire within my heart continued to burn brightly.
Eventually, an opportunity arose to pursue a master's degree in fashion design, despite my limited formal training in the field. Fueled by an unwavering belief in my abilities, I took a leap of faith and have never looked back since. Creating has always come naturally to me, and it is where my true talent lies.
From my humble beginnings in a small town to now, my journey has been guided by a passion that knows no bounds. It is through my creative endeavors that I find purpose, fulfillment, and the ability to express myself. The arts have become an intrinsic part of my identity, shaping my path and fueling my determination to make an impact through my creations.
What experiences or training shaped the designer you are now?
The synergy between my academic studies and hands-on industry experience at various levels has been pivotal in nurturing and refining my creative prowess. Alongside my master's degree in fashion design, my diverse range of experiences has shaped me holistically as a creative individual.
One transformative experience that left a profound impression on me as both a fashion designer and an artist was my attendance at Burning Man in 2019. Aligned with the theme of 'Metamorphosis,' this unique event brought about a tremendous personal and creative transformation. Surrounded by a vibrant community of artists, makers, and free-spirited individuals in a temporary metropolis amidst a desert backdrop, it was a spiritual journey of self-discovery. The Burning Man experience fueled my commitment to ensuring that my designs have a sustainable impact on the world, infusing eco-friendly practices into the very essence of my brand identity. The ethos of radical self-reliance and self-expression provided me with the courage to create artwork that evokes awe, even if some may perceive it as inappropriate or provocative.
Confidence in my own identity and sexuality resonates within my designs, embracing a high-camp aesthetic. For instance, in a recent collection, I repurposed my old hair extensions into a merkin, meticulously stitched them onto a bodysuit design, and hand-bearded nipples, symbolizing empowerment and challenging traditional fashion stereotypes.
To support my creative endeavors, I have worked as a fashion stylist in boutiques and department stores. It brings me immense joy to witness the transformation of clients who initially never imagined themselves in a certain style. When they try something unexpected and are amazed by how beautiful they look, it is a fulfilling moment. Friends often seek my styling advice, and they appreciate my ability to understand their vision, even if our personal styles may differ greatly. I possess a keen eye for capturing and elevating beauty.
During my career, I had the opportunity to work with Danielle Nicole as a handbag concept designer after being recognized at the Independent Handbag Designer Awards. This experience further deepened my interest in handbags and accessories. I recognize that handbags serve as the finishing touch, completing an outfit and adding a personal touch to one's style. They are the proverbial icing on the cake.
Amidst the pandemic, I ventured into the creative makeup scene. It became another avenue for showcasing individuality and uniqueness. As a certified maximalist, makeup looks align with and amplify my intuitive creativity. When envisioning my designs, I consider them as a cohesive package, encompassing clothing, handbags, accessories, styling, and makeup. It is through this holistic approach that I can deliver my complete vision, from the smallest details to the overarching message I aim to convey.
With every facet of my creative expression, from fashion to handbags, styling, and makeup, I strive to create a comprehensive experience that brings my artistic vision to life. Each element serves as a carrier, delivering my full creative vision while encapsulating every little detail and conveying a larger message. It is through this multidimensional approach that I seek to inspire and connect with others.
You work with fashion design and accessories and are well-recognized for your handbag collections. Why did you choose to pursue a career in fashion? What inspired you to follow this path?
From a very young age, my passion for fashion was palpable. I vividly recall meticulously curating my outfits, even dating back to my kindergarten years. At the tender age of five, I embarked on my first foray into design, crafting a collection featuring a vibrant lemon yellow bandeau shorts set. Fueling my creativity further, I would hand-sew garments for my beloved Barbie dolls and teddy bear using scrap fabric found around the house.
To this day, the thought of working a conventional 9 to 5 office job within a bank or corporation feels inconceivable. The urge to defy the ordinary, to immerse myself in hands-on activities, artistic endeavors, and various creative outlets is ingrained within me. I possess an unwavering compulsion to transform the concepts that take shape within my mind into tangible realities, ready to be shared with the world.
As a goal-oriented individual, once I set my mind on a concept or creative idea, nothing can stand in my way. I am unwavering in my dedication, diligently removing any roadblocks that impede my progress. Focusing intently on my objectives, I immerse myself in the pursuit of a career in fashion. This path grants me the opportunity to give birth to my ideas and align my passion with my day-to-day work. I am profoundly grateful for every opportunity that allows me to share my unique vision with the world. Witnessing the inspiration it ignites in others brings an immense sense of fulfillment and accomplishment, leaving an indelible smile etched upon my face.
For me, fashion is not merely a profession; it is an avenue through which I express my truest self. It allows me to channel my boundless creativity, explore innovative concepts, and leave an indelible imprint upon the world. The opportunity to inspire others, to touch their lives through my creations, fills me with an unparalleled sense of joy and satisfaction. Each instance of inspiring someone else reaffirms my purpose and drives me to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible.
In this journey of self-expression and creative fulfillment, I am unwaveringly committed to bringing my vision to life and sharing it with the whole world. I embrace the exhilarating challenge of turning ideas into reality, and it is this relentless pursuit that fuels my passion and propels me forward.
How do you design your pieces? What are your influences, and who is your ideal customer? Do you have any role model or figure you particularly look up to, when it comes to style and design?
My design process is fluid and adaptable, much like my spontaneous nature. Inspiration can strike from anywhere and anything in life. There are moments when I find myself in a fabric store or a thrift shop, and the materials seem to communicate with me, revealing designs in my mind's eye. It's akin to a sculptor envisioning the final form of a piece while it remains a raw stone. At times, it's an experience that leaves a lasting impact on me, while other artists and creators can ignite my imagination. For instance, a friend's embroidery piece once sparked an idea that led to a new design.
Once the visions and sketches take shape, I delve into the development process, seeking optimal solutions to various challenges. This can involve tackling construction problems, determining the best seams, or devising ways to create mechanical-like movements in my handbag designs. It also entails selecting materials that best bring to life the desired silhouette I aim to achieve. Throughout this journey, I engage in a cycle of trial, error, modification, and repetition, persisting until I am fully satisfied and able to transform the images in my mind into tangible reality.
My ideal customer embodies a profound sense of comfort and confidence in their own skin. They fearlessly stand out and assert themselves, radiating self-assurance and leaving a lasting impression wherever they go. They exude confidence in their sexuality and possess an undeniable presence that draws everyone's attention.
I have always admired and resonated with the spirit of Elsa Schiaparelli, a trailblazing fashion designer who fearlessly embraced her individuality. She serves as my role model, epitomizing the qualities I strive for as a fearless female fashion designer. Schiaparelli's ability to transcend societal boundaries and norms through her witty and eccentric designs is truly remarkable. From using shoes as hats to incorporating newspaper prints and red nail gloves, her strokes of genius may have appeared outrageous to some, yet they shattered preconceived notions and defied conventions. Looking back, those iconic pieces continue to be reinvented by different designers time and time again. Today, I admire how Daniel Roseberry has breathed new life into the Schiaparelli brand, maintaining its identity while infusing innovative and provocative designs season after season. In many ways, this resonates with the vibe I aspire to create through my own designs – to inspire others and occasionally shock the audience with thought-provoking and controversial pieces.
In your statement, you mention creating "pieces that merge functionality, sustainability, and harmony." How do you achieve that? And what are, in your opinion, the key elements a piece should have to tick all these boxes?
In all of my current endeavors and recent collections, my focus is centered on utilizing recycled materials to achieve a harmonious blend of functionality and sustainability, ultimately inspiring and captivating the wearer. Each piece is designed with versatility in mind, allowing for mix-and-match possibilities within the collection and even beyond. Certain accessory pieces can be deconstructed and worn individually, serving as standalone fashion items or integrated into clothing ensembles. For instance, my tote jacket can be separated into two distinct tote bags. When zipped together, it transforms into a statement jacket or a striking collar piece. Furthermore, it is reversible, adding to its multifunctional nature. Through the incorporation of upcycled materials, I have crafted a collection that seamlessly merges aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability.
In my view, the key to creating designs that check all the boxes lies in striking a balance. As a fashion designer, I strive to infuse each creation with a sense of individuality and uniqueness without compromising on function and comfort. Having lived in California, I have been greatly influenced by the coastal, comfort-forward lifestyle prevalent in the region. When embarking on my design process, I approach it as a "problem solver," ensuring that even the most avant-garde pieces possess practicality, such as incorporating pockets for essential storage. It is essential to strike a harmonious balance among various elements, including overall aesthetics, silhouette, materials and fabrics, wearability, and charisma. By achieving this equilibrium, I am able to craft designs that resonate with individuals seeking both style and substance.
Speaking of sustainability, we have recently witnessed growing attention toward sustainable fashion. Where do you stand in this regard? Do you embrace this movement, or is it just greenwashing?
Sustainability lies at the very core of my design signature and philosophy. The staggering waste generated by the fashion industry compels both large and small brands to take responsibility and drive change. Personally, I find immense joy in recycling and upcycling materials, witnessing the transformative power as each piece breathes new life into my hands. Even before "sustainability" became a trendy buzzword, I embraced this movement out of creative necessity. However, with its rise in popularity, I have observed certain brands and companies exploit sustainability as a mere marketing tool, prioritizing profits over transparency and accountability in their supply chains, sourcing practices, and environmental initiatives.
I firmly believe in the collective power of fashion designers who share my profound commitment to sustainable fashion and the adoption of eco-friendly principles. It is through this united force that we can shape a brighter and more sustainable future for the entire industry. By fostering a culture of transparency, responsibility, and ethical practices, we can challenge the status quo and pave the way for genuine change. As designers, we have the ability to influence consumers and industry stakeholders alike, raising awareness about the importance of sustainable practices and fostering a greater sense of accountability. Together, we can redefine the fashion landscape, shifting towards a more conscientious and environmentally conscious approach.
In my own design journey, sustainability is not just a trend to follow but a fundamental value that guides every aspect of my creative process. I am deeply committed to minimizing waste, sourcing eco-friendly materials, and championing responsible production methods. By embracing sustainable practices and forging partnerships with like-minded individuals and organizations, we can ensure that fashion becomes a force for good, respecting both the planet and its inhabitants. Let us work collectively to shape an industry that not only creates beautiful designs but also prioritizes the well-being of our planet and future generations.
As sustainability is a recurring theme in your production, what procedures and protocols do you implement to ensure your pieces are sustainably made?
At the core of my design philosophy is a commitment to sustainability, reflected in every aspect of my production process. Right from the sourcing stage, I prioritize two main channels: factory/industry leftovers, deadstocks, and second-hand materials. Each piece I create is truly unique and meticulously handcrafted in San Francisco. By avoiding mass production, I minimize issues such as carbon emissions, harmful chemical dyes, and excessive transportation.
Throughout the production process, I take great care to minimize waste at every stage. One area where waste reduction plays a significant role is pattern optimization. Through careful manipulation of fabrics and creative draping techniques, I strive to achieve zero waste patterns for select second-hand pieces. Additionally, I diligently collect all fabric scraps generated during production, ensuring they are recycled and transformed into new textiles. This sustainable cycle perpetuates, with no material going to waste.
Promoting longevity is another crucial element in fostering sustainable fashion practices. This is where my signature multi-wearable pieces with meticulous craftsmanship come into play. Handmade handbags, for example, offer greater durability compared to mass-produced counterparts. Similarly, my multi-wearable designs are purposefully created to minimize the need for frequent replacements. By investing in quality construction and versatile pieces, I aim to provide individuals with timeless fashion choices that withstand the test of time.
In essence, my approach to sustainability goes beyond buzzwords and superficial gestures. It is deeply ingrained in every stage of my design and production process. By embracing alternative sourcing methods, minimizing waste through pattern optimization and recycling, and prioritizing longevity through quality craftsmanship, I strive to create a positive impact on both the environment and the individuals who wear my designs. Together, we can foster a more sustainable fashion industry, where conscious choices and responsible practices reign supreme.
Let's talk about the future. Do you plan to start your own brand? Or would you like to work as a designer for bigger, more established brands?
In the dynamic and exhilarating world of fashion, I have set my sights on launching my own brand in the coming years. My ultimate goal is to make a lasting impact and bring pure joy to people's lives. Through my brand, I aspire to create a sustainable handbag line that stands out from the crowd. I am driven by the desire to develop my own one-of-a-kind textile using recycled materials as the foundation. In each design, I will infuse fun and whimsical details while ensuring the utmost quality in construction.
This brand is more than just a label; it embodies an attitude that defies boundaries and transcends the limitations of space and time. It is a celebration of thinking outside the box and embracing the power of uniqueness and individuality. While working as a designer for established brands has its own allure, the time has come for me to carve out my own path. This venture allows me to fully unleash my creativity, push the boundaries of innovation, and manifest my distinct vision for the world of fashion.
I strive to evoke a sense of delight and wonder with every piece I create. My brand will be a reflection of my passion, my dedication to sustainability, and my unwavering commitment to excellence. Through my designs, I aim to bring joy to those who experience them, offering a fusion of artistry, functionality, and a touch of the extraordinary. I am excited to embark on this journey, knowing that I have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact and leave an indelible mark on the fashion industry.
