ARTIST STATEMENT

"Float" is the centerpiece of a series that explores the enchanting interplay between tradition and modernity in the United Arab Emirates. This collection delves into the unique cultural landscape of the UAE, portraying elements that symbolize its rich heritage and dynamic evolution.

In "Float," an Emirati woman is depicted gracefully suspended in mid-air against the Dubai skyline. The purple sky infuses the scene with a sense of twilight magic, inviting introspection and wonder. Her blue abaya not only honors traditional attire but also conveys serenity and fluidity, suggesting a harmonious blend of heritage and progress. The black buildings serve as majestic silhouettes, their presence amplified by the yellow lights that punctuate the night, symbolizing the vibrant energy and continuous growth of the city.

Expanding on this narrative, the series includes artworks like "Infinite Horizons," where a camel drifts serenely above the vast expanse of the desert. The camel, a symbol of endurance and tradition, contrasts with the modern elements introduced in the background, such as sleek skyscrapers or distant wind turbines, highlighting the UAE's journey from its nomadic past to its innovative present.

Through this series, I aim to evoke a sense of wonder and reflection, encouraging viewers to contemplate the dynamic coexistence of tradition and modernity. Each piece is a visual ode to the UAE's unique narrative, where the past and present converge in a mesmerizing dance of light, color, and cultural symbolism. "Float" and its companion artworks celebrate the enduring spirit and visionary journey of the UAE, offering a poetic exploration of its identity and aspirations.

INTERVIEW

What initially inspired you to pursue an art career, and how did your early experiences in the UAE shape your artistic journey?

I was raised in an artistic family and have been painting since a young age. From a very young age, I was always fascinated by the rich cultural heritage of the UAE and the vibrant art scene around me. Growing up in the UAE, I was surrounded by a mix of traditional and modern influences, which sparked my curiosity and creativity. The dynamic environment of Dubai, with its rapid development and deep-rooted traditions, provided a unique backdrop for my artistic exploration.

How did your education at Zayed University influence your artistic style and approach, and are there any particular lessons or experiences from your time there that continue to resonate with you?

My education at Zayed University was instrumental in shaping my artistic style and approach. Initially, I used to create 2D artworks, but after studying interior design, the whole room became a canvas to me, transforming my focus to 3D artworks such as sculptures. From there, I expanded into interactive and immersive art. The curriculum, which combined theoretical knowledge with practical application, allowed me to explore various mediums and techniques. One of the most significant lessons I learned was the importance of conceptual thinking and the power of storytelling through art. The supportive environment and the opportunity to work closely with professors and fellow students fostered a sense of community and collaboration that continues to resonate with me today.

Having participated in around 100 art exhibitions in 20 countries, how do you perceive the global reception of your work compared to the local response in the UAE?

Participating in art exhibitions around the world has given me a unique perspective on how my work is received globally compared to locally. Internationally, my work is often viewed through the lens of curiosity and fascination with Emirati culture and the unique blend of tradition and modernity that my pieces depict. In the UAE, there is a deeper, more personal connection to my work as it reflects their own experiences and heritage. Both receptions are incredibly valuable to me; the global audience helps me see my work in a broader context, while the local audience affirms the authenticity and relevance of my artistic expressions.

Your latest series explores the interplay between tradition and modernity in the UAE. Can you delve into the inspiration and creative process behind this collection?

The inspiration behind my latest series comes from the rapidly changing landscape of the UAE. I wanted to capture the tension and harmony between the old and the new, showcasing how tradition and modernity coexist and shape our identity. My creative process involves extensive research and immersion in both historical and contemporary aspects of Emirati culture. I blend traditional techniques with modern materials and forms, creating a dialogue between the past and the present. Each piece is a reflection of my personal journey and the evolving story of the UAE.

The UAE's cultural symbolism plays a significant role in your work. How do you select the elements that best represent the rich heritage and dynamic evolution of the UAE?

Selecting the right elements to represent the UAE's heritage and evolution involves a deep understanding and appreciation of our culture. I aim to choose symbols that resonate universally while also being distinctly Emirati. By incorporating elements like the falcon, dhow boats, and modern skyscrapers, I strive to create a visual narrative that honors our past and embraces our future.

In the series, you celebrate the UAE's spirit and journey, as mentioned in your statement. Could you elaborate on the themes and messages you aim to convey through these pieces?

The themes of my series revolve around identity, progress, and resilience. I aim to convey the message that the UAE is a nation deeply rooted in its traditions while being unafraid to innovate and evolve. Through my work, I celebrate the spirit of the Emirati people—their ability to adapt and thrive amidst change. Each piece is a tribute to our collective journey and an invitation for viewers to reflect on their own relationship with tradition and modernity.

As an artist, author, and entrepreneur, how do you balance these different roles, and in what ways do they influence each other?

Balancing my roles as an artist, author of 33 years of Untold Secrets, and founder and CEO of The Paintly Store, known as a limited edition brand concept. It requires careful time management and a passion for what I do. These roles are interconnected and often feed into each other. My artistic practice informs my writing, allowing me to explore themes visually and textually. Entrepreneurship, on the other hand, teaches me valuable skills in marketing and networking. Each role enriches my perspective and enhances my ability to communicate my vision effectively.

What challenges do you face when creating art that bridges the gap between tradition and modernity, and how do you overcome them?

One of the main challenges is finding a balance between honoring traditional elements and incorporating modern influences in a way that feels authentic and meaningful. To overcome this, I engage in continuous learning and experimentation. I also stay connected to my roots by participating in cultural events and collaborating with others who share a similar vision.

How do you hope your audience will engage with and interpret your work?

I hope my audience engages with my work on both an emotional and intellectual level. I want them to feel a connection to the stories and themes I present and to reflect on their own experiences. My aim is to spark conversations about tradition and modernity and to inspire a deeper appreciation for the cultural narratives that shape our world.

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for your future artistic endeavors, and are there any new themes or projects you are particularly excited to explore?

Looking ahead, I aspire to continue exploring themes that resonate with me and my audience. I am particularly excited about a new project that delves into the relationship between technology and cultural preservation. This project will involve a combination of digital media and traditional art forms, aiming to create a bridge between the past and the future. I am also interested in collaborating with artists from different disciplines to push the boundaries of my creative practice and discover new ways of storytelling. They can follow my journey on my Instagram account or by subscribing to my newsletter on my website.
