Elena Done | Painting, Monoprint
Born in Moscow in 1973, Elena Done is a practicing psychologist and hypnotherapist. She received academic art education quite recently, in 2019, from the Moscow State Academic of Art Institute, named after Surikov as the Russian Academy of Arts. She became a member of the Union of Artists of Moscow, and in the same year, she moved to Europe. As a result of their personal experience of moving from Eastern to Western Europe, from a megapolis city to a quiet Spanish village in Costa-del-Sol, from North to South, her identity, as well as her artistic language, was exposed to a huge transformation. After moving to Spain, she re-educated herself in terms of color, research, and freedom of experiment. She was an artist who transitioned to general contemporary culture and languages, broadening her visual vocabulary in the multinational expat community. She is developing her new style, where she works with figures but uses a lot of abstract techniques. Previous academic education, psychological legacy and her current research of contemporary art, all of it is a possibility for a new consolidation, reassembly of past, present and future. In 2023, she became a member of the Association of Visual Artists of Malaga (APLAMA).
Elena Done's work is rooted in the tension between abstraction and figuration, where the boundaries between form and formlessness blur, inviting the viewer into an intense visual experience. Her brushstrokes are deliberate yet spontaneous, capturing the raw energy of human existence, sexuality, and mortality, often drawing on art history, from the Russian Avant-Garde to Abstract Expressionism, as she reinterprets those traditions through a modern lens. Her work is about creating a space where meaning is elusive, and interpretation is personal. She is interested in how we make sense of what we see and how that process of seeing is tied to desire, memory, and the subconscious.
