Maria Elena de Paula | Painting
Maria Elena de Paula was born in the winter of 1983, during the final years of the Uruguayan dictatorship, in a humble home in Montevideo. In contrast to a dark period in the country's history and a backdrop of scarcity, she turned to drawing as a place of freedom. Her childhood was marked by a strong, self-taught creative drive, which eventually led her to study graphic design as a way to be connected to the artistic world.
After a decade of excelling in her career as a graphic designer, she decided to re-engage with art, this time through oil painting. She started studying mainly at Mariana Barraco's studio in 2018, where she has been able to grow in her artistic path.
Through a palette of cold neon colors, the artist manages to immerse herself in liquid and dreamlike environments. She befriends hostile places and transforms vague memories into intriguing settings. A dreamlike atmosphere unites the different representations where South American native vegetation and threatened environments often predominate.
Her works have been exhibited in various collective shows in Uruguay on several occasions.
