Meireles de Pinho | Sculpture, Painting

Meireles de Pinho - Portrait at the exhibition “Composições para Setembro”, Casa das Artes, Porto, 2023

In 1993, Meireles de Pinho completed his studies in Fine Arts with a specialization in Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Porto. In 1997, he furthered his studies at the University of Seville in the Sculpture program, as a scholarship holder from Instituto Camões. In 2011, he completed his Master's degree in Art and Design for Public Space (FBAUP).
Since 1988, he has actively participated in group and solo exhibitions, showcasing works of drawing, sculpture, and diverse installations. In 2007, he joined the Organizing Collection and served as curator of the Land Art Gaia event, a project in collaboration with Gaia Biological Park. Throughout his artistic career, he has been involved in numerous projects and collaborations, ranging from individual and collaborative scenography creations to public space interventions. As an artist and sculptor, he has contributed to creative productions globally.

Drawing is at the center of his mental process, serving as an indispensable daily practice that shapes his ideas and reflects his creative thinking. It is not only a necessity but also a tool for research and study, playing a crucial role in the development of his three-dimensional works. Throughout his artistic journey, drawing has intersected with other forms of expression, such as sculpture and public space interventions, often in collaboration with architectural thought. Meireles de Pinho views his work as that of an archaeologist in reverse: while the archaeologist uncovers by removing, he adds layers, creating to reveal new meanings. His sculptures are frequently connected to the place and space in which they are situated, engaging in a dialogue with the collective memories and histories of those environments. These memories and stories serve as ongoing sources of inspiration, grounding and informing his work within the context it is created, ultimately reinforcing the profound relationship between art, space, and memory.
