ARTIST STATEMENT

“In my latest photographic series, I delve into the mysterious and ethereal realms of marine life, capturing the diverse forms and vivid colors of its inhabitants. This work focuses on the fleeting interplay between light and water, which reveals the surreal qualities of jellyfish, corals, and other marine species.

My practice is driven by a quest to expose the unseen and often overlooked aspects of oceanic life. Utilizing high-resolution photography, I highlight the intricate details and rich biodiversity of marine ecosystems. Each composition is meticulously crafted not merely to document but to foster a deeper appreciation for the natural artistry found beneath the ocean's surface.

The driving concept behind this series stems from environmental conservation efforts, emphasizing the critical need to protect our fragile aquatic environments. By showcasing the ocean's inhabitants in a compelling and visually engaging manner, I aim to spark conversations about marine preservation and strengthen our connection to this hidden world.

Inspired by the acclaimed underwater photographer François Baelen, my work explores the intricacies of marine biodiversity. Baelen’s ability to capture the hidden lives of nudibranchs, crabs, fish, shrimps, and other small marine creatures through macro photography deeply influences my artistic vision. His photographs highlight the complexity and beauty of these organisms, reminding us of the ecological significance of even the smallest life forms.

My photographs extend beyond simple visual records; they are an invitation to discover and cherish the unseen elements of the underwater world. INTERVIEW

Let's start from the basics. Who are you, and how did you develop into the artist you are today?

I am Haiying Nie, an artist specializing in underwater and macro photography. Growing up in China, I developed a deep appreciation for environmental diversity early on, which evolved into a passion for capturing the intricate beauty of miniature ecosystems. My work uniquely blends design principles with anthropological insights, striking a balance between artistic expression and scientific observation.
Extensive travel and exposure to various cultures have enriched my perspective, allowing me to depict the natural world in distinctive ways. Now residing in Scotland, I continue to explore both underwater and terrestrial landscapes, pushing the boundaries of my craft. My ongoing projects aim to engage and educate audiences about the beauty and complexity of nature.
As an advocate for environmental conservation, I use my work to promote understanding and protection of delicate ecosystems. I strive to foster a deeper connection and appreciation for the natural world, inspiring others to see and value the often-overlooked wonders around us.

Can you tell us about your educational journey and how it has shaped your photographic style?

My educational journey began with a Bachelor's degree in Animation Design, where I learned fundamental skills in visual storytelling and creative design. Among the courses, photography was a mandatory subject, which provided me with a solid technical foundation in photography. This training included essential aspects such as photography techniques, composition, lighting, and post-processing.
After completing my undergraduate studies, I pursued a Master's degree in Art and Design. This program further enhanced my creative and technical abilities, allowing me to explore various artistic expressions and refine my photographic style.
Subsequently, I undertook another master's program in Anthropology, Art, and Perception. This interdisciplinary field required me to conduct field research, often using photography as a primary tool for documentation and analysis. The combination of anthropological insights and artistic techniques profoundly influenced my approach to photography, enabling me to capture the intricate details and unique perspectives of the subjects I study.
Through these educational experiences, I have learned to blend scientific observation with artistic expression, creating images that are both visually compelling and rich in detail. This balance is a hallmark of my photographic style, allowing me to reveal the often-overlooked complexities of the natural world. 

What inspired you to pursue underwater and macro photography? And what drew you to specialize in capturing tiny plants, insects, and marine organisms?

When I first began learning photography, I practiced by shooting plants and insects. One afternoon, just after a rainstorm, I stumbled upon a flower adorned with glistening water droplets. As the sunlight shone upon them, they sparkled like countless tiny jewels embedded in the petals. I picked up my camera and attempted to capture this beautiful moment. At the same time, focusing on the flower, a small insect climbed onto a petal, its tiny form vividly animated by the shimmering droplets. This moment revealed to me the intricate and magical aspects of nature, drawing me deeply into the beauty of the microscopic world.
Later, during a dive in Bohol, Philippines, I encountered a vividly colored nudibranch with bright blue, orange, and yellow hues. I was astonished by the life of this tiny creature and felt a strong urge to document its beauty for others to see. This dive opened the door to exploring the mysteries of the ocean and deepened my fascination with marine life. With only five percent of marine organisms known to humans, I hope to contribute by combining science and art to raise awareness and inspire action towards ocean conservation.

How do you achieve the delicate balance between artistic expression and scientific observation in your work?

Achieving a balance between artistic expression and scientific observation is central to my photographic work, enabling me to create images that are both visually captivating and scientifically informative. I begin each project with thorough research, understanding the behavior, habitat, and ecological significance of my subjects. This scientific groundwork ensures accurate and authentic captures, while high-resolution equipment and precise camera settings allow me to reveal intricate details that might otherwise be missed.
In my fieldwork, patience and adaptability are crucial. I spend considerable time observing subjects in their natural environments, capturing spontaneous moments that reflect their true essence. Post-processing is done with integrity, making subtle adjustments to enhance visual appeal without compromising authenticity. By incorporating educational and narrative elements, I bridge the gap between art and science, aiming to educate and inspire my audience about the natural world. My interdisciplinary background in design and anthropology uniquely equips me to blend scientific rigor with artistic creativity, resulting in images that are both informative and compelling.

Can you share a memorable experience from your extensive travels that has influenced your photography?

During one of my extensive travels, I had a transformative experience while diving off the coast of Bohol, Philippines. It was a serene morning, and the water was crystal clear, offering perfect visibility. Equipped with my camera, I was eager to explore and capture the underwater world that lay ahead.
As I ventured deeper, I was immediately struck by the vibrant ecosystem of the coral reefs. Everywhere I looked, there were dazzling displays of marine life—schools of fish weaving through the corals and the rhythmic movement of sea anemones swaying with the currents. Amidst this colorful spectacle, my eyes caught sight of a tiny yet striking creature—a nudibranch. Its vivid colors of bright blue, orange, and yellow stood out sharply against the coral, and I was instantly mesmerized by its delicate beauty.
I carefully approached the nudibranch, mindful of not disturbing its natural habitat. The more I observed and photographed it, the more I was fascinated by its intricate patterns and graceful movements. This tiny marine organism, often overlooked due to its size, revealed an extraordinary level of detail and complexity through my lens. 
This dive instilled in me a deeper sense of purpose. I realized how little is known about many marine species and the urgent need to raise awareness about the fragility of these ecosystems.

What do you hope your audience takes away from your photographs?

I hope that my audience takes away a deep appreciation for the intricate beauty and complexity of the natural world from my photographs. By focusing on the often-overlooked details of tiny plants, insects, and marine organisms, I aim to reveal the hidden wonders that exist all around us. I want viewers to see the extraordinary in the ordinary, to marvel at the delicate patterns, vibrant colors, and fascinating behaviors of these small but significant life forms.
Additionally, I hope my photographs inspire a sense of curiosity and a desire to learn more about the subjects I capture. I believe that understanding leads to appreciation, and appreciation leads to a commitment to protect. By providing context and background information about the ecological roles and significance of these organisms, I aim to educate my audience and deepen their connection to the natural world.
Ultimately, I want my work to spark a conversation about the importance of conservation. The natural world is incredibly fragile, and many of the species I photograph are vulnerable to environmental changes. Through my images, I hope to raise awareness about the urgent need to protect our ecosystems and encourage others to take action, whether it'ssupporting conservation efforts, reducing their environmental footprint, or simply becoming more mindful of the natural world.

How do you prepare for an underwater or macro photography shoot? 

To prepare for an underwater or macro photography shoot, I start with thorough research on the subjects and locations to understand their behavior and optimal conditions for capturing them. I ensure all my equipment, including cameras, lenses, and underwater housings, are in excellent condition and properly set up for the specific shoot conditions.
On-site, I take time to acclimate to the environment, whether it's a dive site or a natural habitat for macro subjects. Safety checks are crucial, especially for underwater shoots, where I also brief my dive team. During the shoot, I practice patience and careful observation to capture authentic moments. Post-shoot, I review and edit my images to enhance their visual appeal while maintaining their natural authenticity.

Ultimately, what messages do you want to convey with your work? Is there a theme, message, or battle you would like to support with your art? 

I aim to convey the message of life's extraordinary diversity and resilience, especially focusing on the small and often overlooked organisms that play critical roles in our ecosystems. My work seeks to emphasize the interconnectedness of all living things and the importance of every species, no matter how small, in maintaining the health and balance of our planet.
One of the main messages I want to communicate is the urgency of biodiversity conservation. The small creatures I photograph are integral parts of larger ecosystems, and their well-being is crucial for the health of our environment. Through my images, I aim to raise awareness about the threats these organisms face, such as habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change. By highlighting their beauty and significance, I hope to inspire action to protect and preserve biodiversity.
Additionally, I strive to support scientific research and education through my art. By collaborating with scientists and conservationists, I can help document and communicate important discoveries and insights about the natural world. My photographs not only serve as artistic expressions but also as educational tools that can enhance public understanding and appreciation of science and nature. 

What new projects or areas of exploration are you currently working on?

Currently, I am embarking on several new projects and areas of exploration that build on my passion for capturing the intricate details of the natural world through underwater and macro photography.
One of my exciting new projects involves exploring the hidden ecosystems of tidal pools along the rugged coastlines of Scotland. Tidal pools are microcosms of marine life, teeming with fascinating organisms such as starfish, anemones, and small crustaceans. By photographing these dynamic environments, I aim to showcase the biodiversity and ecological importance of these often-overlooked habitats. This project not only focuses on the beauty of these small ecosystems but also emphasizes the delicate balance required to sustain them.
I am also expanding my macro photography to include a more extensive study of pollinators and their critical role in our ecosystems. This involves photographing bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects in various natural settings, highlighting their interactions with plants and the environment. By documenting these essential species, I hope to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and the threats they face from habitat loss and climate change.
Lastly, I am planning a series of educational workshops and community outreach programs to share my knowledge and passion for photography and conservation. These workshops will cover techniques in underwater and macro photography, as well as discussions on environmental awareness and the role of photography in conservation efforts. Engaging with local communities and aspiring photographers and artists, I hope to inspire a new generation of conservation-minded individuals.

And lastly, what are your plans for the rest of 2024?  

For the rest of 2024, I have an exciting lineup of projects and goals that I am eager to pursue.
One of my primary focuses will be on continuing and expanding my current project documenting marine biodiversity. This includes organizing several dives throughout different seasons to capture the changing underwater landscapes and species behaviors. By the end of the year, I aim to compile a comprehensive visual record that highlights the unique and vibrant marine life in these waters, with the goal of raising awareness and advocating for marine conservation efforts.
In addition to my marine projects, I plan to delve deeper into freshwater ecosystems. I will be conducting a series of field trips to various ponds, rivers, and lakes across the UK. My objective is to photograph and document the intricate world of freshwater plants, insects, and microorganisms. This project will culminate in a detailed photo series showcasing the hidden beauty of freshwater habitats, which I hope to present in both digital and physical exhibitions.
I am also excited to announce that I will be working on a new book project. This book will feature my best underwater and macro photography, accompanied by stories and insights from my travels and research. It will serve as both a visual feast and an educational resource, aiming to inspire and inform readers about the importance of preserving our natural world.
Furthermore, I have plans to participate in several art competitions and exhibitions. These platforms will provide opportunities to share my work with a wider audience and connect with fellow artists and conservationists.
Overall, the rest of 2024 will be a period of creative exploration, community engagement, and relentless pursuit of excellence in my craft. I look forward to pushing the boundaries of my work and making meaningful contributions to the field of nature photography and conservation.
