ARTIST STATEMENT

When the artist paints, they paint the moment. One perspective of the moment. The memory of the moment. Their perspective of the moment.

They delve into the mysteries of fleeting moments, seeking to capture their essence with every stroke of their brush. Through carefully crafted colors and textures, they are reminded of the transient nature of time and the stories that unfold in its passing. Each movement of their brush is imbued with more than just paint; it carries the weight of stories, emotions, and memories that have woven themselves into their consciousness, now yearning for expression.

Each abstract painting becomes a window into a world shaped by memory, emotion, and personal reflection. Through abstract forms and vibrant hues, they evoke a sense of introspection, inviting viewers to explore the depths of their own experiences and perceptions. Their art is not just a visual journey but an emotional and intellectual one, encouraging a deeper engagement with the nuances of human experience.

Art is a delicate balance between the tangible and intangible, a conversation between past and present that unfolds with each artistic expression. It is a meditative journey of discovery, where the canvas serves as a mirror reflecting the complexities of human existence and the beauty found in moments of contemplation. Each piece invites contemplation, layers waiting to be peeled away by the viewer's eyes and soul.

By embracing the impermanence of life and exploring the nuances of our shared human experience, the artist sparks connections and ignites curiosity in those who gaze upon their creations. Through art, we are reminded of the power of perspective, storytelling, and the universal language that unites us all in the tapestry of existence. Their work transcends simple aesthetics; it becomes a means of creating emotional and intellectual communion.

Ultimately, their art aspires to be more than just visually captivating; it is a vessel for shared experience and introspection. Just as every moment is a unique conflux of time and emotion, every painting is an invitation—an invitation to observe, feel, and connect with the transient yet infinitely rich journey of existence. INTERVIEW

Let's talk about yourself first. What initially drew you to study sculpture at the College of Santa Fe?

I initially moved to Santa Fe to pursue a philosophy degree at St. John's College, where I discovered a deep passion for philosophical inquiry. After two years, financial constraints forced me to reconsider my path. Despite this setback, my enthusiasm for exploring philosophical concepts remained unwavering.
Art has been a lifelong passion of mine. Realizing the College of Santa Fe had an exceptional art department, I decided to pivot towards studying art there. The college's outstanding facilities, combined with Santa Fe's vibrant artist community, provided an ideal environment to merge my philosophical interests with a deeper exploration of visual arts.
Guidance from esteemed mentors and working artists like Rick Fisher, Susan York, and Dana Chodzko helped me translate my philosophical ideas into tangible visual forms. This shift allowed me to explore the interconnectedness of philosophy and art, capturing ephemeral moments and the essence of life's impermanence through colors, textures, and abstract forms. Ultimately, this journey seeks to bridge aesthetics with introspection, inviting viewers to engage with their own perceptions and experiences.

You later pursued a different career, before returning to art In 2017. What inspired you to reconnect with your artistic side? And how did you choose to go into painting?

After a severe workplace accident that greatly impacted my health, I was forced to leave my previous career and make a significant life change. During the years spent focusing on my health, I had a lot of time for introspection, which helped me emerge with a newfound vibrancy for life and creativity. I wanted to express myself through my artwork and contribute to collective thought.
During this downtime, I immersed myself in reading and experimented with various artistic mediums, drawing intermittently as my condition allowed. In 2017, I was finally able to refocus my life and pursue art professionally, becoming a full-time artist. However, due to physical limitations, I could no longer create the large-scale sculptures and public art installations I enjoyed during my college days.
Given the space constraints and my physical condition, I turned to painting and found immense satisfaction in expressing my ideas on canvas. Eventually, I moved to a residence with an outbuilding that I could use as a studio, providing ample space to store my supplies and work on my current projects.

What valuable lessons have you learned that are now helping you with your artistic work?

One of the most important lessons I've learned is how to effectively manage my time and energy. When I am feeling well, I follow a daily routine that includes working in my studio from around 5 AM to 10 AM. Afterward, I spend quality time with my family and take an afternoon nap. I often return to the studio in the evening to work for a couple more hours before wrapping up for the day by 8 PM. This schedule has been crucial for my well-being and productivity.
It allows me to focus on my health, handle the various administrative tasks involved in marketing and exhibiting my work, and create art. I maintain this routine seven days a week but remain flexible enough to accommodate physical rest days and life events as needed. I believe that maintaining a healthy balance between personal life and work is essential. It provides the space to develop ideas for my paintings and helps me stay mentally and physically healthy.

Speaking of your work, can you describe your creative process when starting a new piece?

I always begin with a base color, which may not be visible in the final painting, but it forms the essential first layer. This initial color acts as a gateway to the canvas, providing a starting point for my imagination. From there, I explore themes that are on my mind, in the media, or from books I'm currently reading. Lately, I've been delving into quantum physics and examining how our emotional and intellectual lives intersect with it.
It's all about capturing the moment and the present. My painting process is deeply intuitive, driven by the feelings and thoughts that arise from my observations. This method evolves as I work on the painting.
I begin with a color, transition to an idea, and reflect on the relevance or significance of that idea in the moment—whether within myself or in the broader world. From this introspective place, I construct the composition and movement of the painting.

What themes or emotions do you aim to convey through your artwork?

Through my artwork, I aim to capture the essence of the present moment—the fleeting, transient experiences that form our universal human journey. My focus is on the immediacy of painting, the raw emotions behind my subjects, and the significance of each passing instance. My art seeks to seize fragments of time, acknowledging life's impermanence while emphasizing the importance of being present.
These paintings serve as meditations on ephemeral moments, bridging the transient and enduring aspects of human experience. Each brushstroke aims to encapsulate the "now," the immediacy of creation, and the emotional depth embedded in my subjects. It's a conscious effort to grasp a fragment of time, celebrating the present moment amid life's delicate nature.
The emotions captured in these moments encompass universal themes—loss, love, pain, separation, joy, and acceptance—creating a symphony of human experience. Through color, I weave a tapestry of memory and experience, with each piece telling its own story. These artworks are more than visuals; they are narratives yearning to convey stories, emotions, and personal reflections.
My artistic pursuit mirrors the profound explorations in quantum physics. Just as a quantum particle can exist in multiple states simultaneously, my artwork strives to encapsulate the layered essence of a single moment. The uncertainty and fluidity inherent in the quantum world are reflected in my strokes, capturing transient emotions and experiences that solidify only upon observation and contemplation.
My current work consists of abstract creations that offer a window into a world of memories and emotions akin to the unobserved possibilities in the quantum realm. It invites viewers on an introspective journey, encouraging them to explore the potentialities and moments continuously shaping their reality. Through vivid hues and abstract forms, I foster contemplation and engagement that reach beyond the visual to the emotional and intellectual realms. It is a call, much like quantum theories, for us to re-evaluate our understanding of the universe.
For me, art is a discovery driven by meditation and awe. It mirrors the complexities and beauty of human existence, resonating with the intricate processes of quantum mechanics. Each piece invites viewers to peel back its layers, unveiling deeper meanings that connect with individual stories. My hope is to ignite connections and curiosity, emphasizing the power of perspective, storytelling, and the universal language that unites us.
Ultimately, my art aims to transcend mere aesthetics to become a vessel for shared experiences and introspection, just as quantum physics uncovers profound truths beyond surface observations. Each painting, a unique convergence of time and emotion, invites observers to experience, feel, and connect with the rich tapestry of existence. Through my artworks, I create a space for personal narratives to intersect, offering a glimpse into the interconnectedness of the quantum world and enhancing our collective understanding of life's fleeting yet profoundly significant moments.

In your statement, you mention both your spouse and "canine companions." How much of your personal life can we see in your work? And how does it influence your practice as an artist?

My personal life is deeply intertwined with my life as an artist. Before I begin each painting, I ask my spouse to choose a color. This chosen color becomes the initial spark for my creative exploration and thoughts, serving as the anchor for the entire painting process. In a real sense, these colors "color my moment," making each piece a unique blend of personal influence and artistic expression.
My personal relationships are profoundly meaningful and inseparable from my art. The love and companionship I receive from my spouse and my canine companions ground me emotionally and creatively. These relationships shape my experiences and influence every moment of my world, providing both the inspiration and the stability necessary for my work.
The connections and circumstances of my life act as a foundation upon which my artistic practice is built. The emotional depth and richness drawn from these relationships seep into my paintings, imbuing them with a sense of authenticity and personal narrative. It is this intertwining of personal and artistic life that gives my work its unique character and resonance.

Since returning to art, you have worked and exhibited extensively. Can you share a memorable experience from one of your exhibitions in London, Santiago, or the U.S.?

Similar to my artistic process, I have been exploring various locations, venues, and markets for my work. My goal is to share my art and engage in meaningful conversations within these communities.
However, being disabled presents significant challenges for physically attending many exhibitions. While I hope this will improve in the future, for now, I am participating in Zoom openings when available and attending local events whenever possible.
Despite these challenges, one memorable experience stands out. During one of my virtual exhibitions, a viewer from across the globe shared how my work resonated deeply with a personal experience. This connection felt incredibly meaningful, as it underscored the power of art to transcend physical boundaries and foster human connection. Moments like these reinforce the importance of sharing my work and continuing to engage with diverse audiences, regardless of the format.

Where do you see your work going in the future? Do you plan to experiment with any new medium or technique?

Who knows, really? It all depends on where I am in the world and what I'm thinking and feeling at any given time. I make a conscious effort to detach from these emotions and examine my thoughts from a more grounded perspective. I take pleasure in daily meditation, exploration, and creativity, allowing myself the freedom to experiment without being tied to any specific style or technique. This liberty has led me to develop a personal style that currently blends abstract expressionism and conceptual art, with hints of surrealism.
My present focus is on refining my unique artistic thumbprint while continuing to explore various styles. The future looks promising as I discover the direction of my work in real time. For me, the process and the product are inseparable. I don'tspend too much time envisioning what the next painting will look like until I have applied the base color to the canvas and am ready to get started.
This doesn't mean I neglect developing my skills or practicing my craft. I dedicate many hours to studying and researching art and art history, as well as drawing, painting, and experimenting in the studio. This preparation ensures that when I'm in front of the canvas, I have a wide array of tools at my disposal. This approach allows me to remain open and responsive in the moment, letting the creative process unfold organically.

Something About the Womb, Mixed Media, 48x36x2 in, 2024 © Kimi Kuniyoshi

What are you working on now? Do you have any new series or exhibitions coming up that you would like to share with our readers?

My current work has been profoundly influenced by advancements in quantum physics, an area that has evolved significantly since my studies in the 1980s. Additionally, I am exploring sculpture and working with clay, frequently experimenting with new materials and tools that I may incorporate into my canvases. In September 2024, I will be participating in an invitational group exhibition, Abstract Visions, hosted by The Court House Cultural Center Gallery at Martin Arts in Stuart, Florida. I will be showcasing four pieces in this exhibition, and I am very excited about this opportunity. I also have an upcoming solo online exhibition through Exhibizone, with the date to be determined. I am always seekingother venues that are a good match for showcasing my work.
In addition to exhibitions, I am fortunate to have some of my works featured in global publications, including Artist Talk Magazine, Beyond Words Literary Magazine, and Penn Journal of Arts and Sciences, the University of Pennsylvania Premier Ivy League Arts Magazine.
Currently, I am actively applying for grants to fund a solo exhibition, with the goal of achieving this within the next two years. Alongside this, I am seeking representation from several galleries to advance my artistic career.

And lastly, what would you say to someone looking to revamp their artistic practice? Any word of encouragement or advice you would give to them?

Never give up, and always follow your inner voice. Be open to new and sometimes uncomfortable experiences. Focus on the present moment and strive for personal growth and self-improvement. We only have the "now." Learn, explore, enjoy, and fully experience it while it lasts.
