Torus Torus Studio | Sculpture & Installation

Rennie and Carr have been collaborating since 2018; their joint practice, Torus Torus Studios, brings together half a century of experience in the arts. After meeting at the interdisciplinary collaboration, The Ordered Universe Project, their combined expertise was a natural fit. The practice has produced a growing set of international projects, including commissions for Technological University, Dublin, and the Science Museum, London. They collaborate with architects, academics, engineers, and scientists. Between 2022 and 2024, the studio worked exclusively on the kinetic sculpture “Only Breath”, receiving international acclaim, winning the 2024 North East Visual Artists of the Year at the North East Culture Awards, Coda Awards top 100, placing 5th globally in the public vote, shortlisted for the Blunden Prize, publication in Aesthetica Magazine, May 2024 and Collect Art 101 Contemporary Artists, Volume 8. Rennie and Carr live and work from their studios in North East England.

Torus Torus Studios is a collaborative practice drawn from the synergies and resonances that emerge from interacting with ideas from fields as diverse as sacred geometry, light and optics, ecology, consciousness, and breadth of sciences. Torus Torus Studios believes there is a commonality in the modes of expression between science and art, the humanities and rationalism, dualism and monism. Their work is often complex and detailed, wrought from careful exploration of the possible forms that can emerge through the interaction of pure expression and considered design. Taking part in the making and engineering of elements to realize projects is key to their methodology; they take ownership of the process, applying care and skill at each step to be accountable for the coming into being of a work. Objects move and flow, emulating effortlessness, but are underpinned by meticulous care and attention to detail. The “Human Being” in the moment of conscious creativity can touch ideas that transcend definition and boundaries, and their work seeks to manifest these moments.
