INTERVIEW
You are a self-taught artist working with painting. How did you start getting interested in art? And what keeps you motivated?
My fascination with classical painting ignited during my early years. In my family, we possessed an extensive library, and I found myself immersed in the captivating imagery crafted by the old masters. Spending countless hours poring over their works, I was inspired to recreate their art through my own drawings. Moreover, I was fortunate to have close relatives, including my uncle, who collaborated with the esteemed Georgian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli. On special occasions, I had the privilege of accompanying my uncle to Tsereteli's art workshop, where I eagerly observed the diverse array of talented artists honing their craft. Witnessing their creative processes fueled my motivation to pursue similar endeavors within the comfort of my own home.
What do you wish you knew about contemporary art before you got started?
If I could turn back the hands of time, I would undoubtedly choose to pursue art instead of economics. Coming of age in Tbilisi, Georgia, I embarked on my studies in economics during a tumultuous period marked by the aftermath of civil war, rampant corruption, and widespread chaos. In those challenging times, it seemed that securing a job after graduation relied less on individual skills and more on establishing influential connections within one's chosen field.
However, in hindsight, had I opted for art education, I believe I would have encountered smoother and swifter success in establishing myself. The realm of art, with its inherent creativity and expression, often transcends the constraints imposed by external circumstances. By dedicating myself to the study of art, I would have been able to channel my passion, develop my skills, and forge meaningful connections with like-minded individuals, ultimately paving the way for a more fulfilling and prosperous career.
Nevertheless, I acknowledge that the past cannot be rewritten, and my experiences in economics have undoubtedly shaped who I am today. While I may have missed out on certain opportunities in the art world, I remain determined to nurture my artistic inclinations and explore the limitless possibilities that lie ahead.
Can you tell us about the process of creating your work? What aspect of your work do you pay particular attention to?
In moments of inspiration, a sudden idea sparks within me, captivating my imagination. I carefully refine it within the confines of my mind, visualizing the intricate details and envisioning the final outcome. Sketches take shape, effortlessly flowing from my hand onto paper as I strive to capture the essence of my concept. Transferring these sketches onto canvas, I embark on a transformative journey.
Whether I paint cityscapes, animals, or any other elements, my ultimate goal remains constant—to infuse life into my creations. I yearn to imbue them with a soul, to convey a sense of vitality that transcends the mere strokes of paint. It is through the subtle interplay of color, texture, and form that I breathe life into each stroke, instilling movement and depth that resonates with the viewer.
As I paint, my brush becomes an extension of my emotions, coaxing out the essence of what lies within. With each stroke, I strive to evoke an emotional response to awaken a connection between the viewer and the subject. It is in this exchange that the true magic of art unfolds as the viewer becomes immersed in the world I have created, feeling the very heartbeat of my paintings.
For me, the true measure of success lies not in technical precision or adherence to realism but in the ability to touch the viewer's soul. I seek to create art that breathes and pulses with life, leaving an indelible impression long after it is observed. Through my work, I aspire to ignite a spark of emotion, provoke contemplation, and invite the viewer into a dialogue with the living spirit captured within each brushstroke.
What is the most challenging part of your work? And where do you find inspiration?
As an artist without a formal art education, I find solace in the freedom of creating each artwork purely by intuition and feeling. I embark on my artistic journey without a predetermined notion of the final result, allowing each piece to take on a life of its own. This organic and instinctive approach lends a unique quality to my artworks, as they become a manifestation of my innermost emotions and thoughts.
However, this process becomes particularly challenging when undertaking commissioned work. In such instances, I must delicately navigate the fine balance between understanding the vision of my clients and infusing my own artistic expression. It requires a deep level of empathy and communication to truly grasp their desires while simultaneously adding my personal touch to create a result that satisfies both the client and my artistic integrity.
My frequent travels grant me the opportunity to immerse myself in diverse cultures and engage with a multitude of fascinating individuals. These encounters become a wellspring of inspiration, nourishing my creative spirit and enriching my artistic repertoire. Each culture I encounter brings a unique perspective and aesthetic sensibility, broadening the horizons of my artistic vision.
By experiencing the world firsthand, I am able to explore the nuances of different landscapes, architecture, traditions, and human stories. These encounters shape my artistic voice and enable me to create art that resonates with a wide audience. It is my mission to share these creations with the world, offering glimpses of beauty, emotion, and connection through my art.
While lacking a formal art education, I embrace the freedom and spontaneity it affords me. It is through this unfiltered expression that I am able to offer a truly authentic and distinct artistic perspective. With each artwork I create, I hope to inspire, provoke, and evoke a sense of wonder in those who encounter my work, forging a meaningful connection between the artist and the audience.
What is your favorite experience as an artist so far?
The summer of last year granted me a remarkable opportunity as I resided at the esteemed Art Residence in the enchanting city of Antibes, nestled in the picturesque South of France. The Region's Department of Culture graciously extended an invitation for me to create my artwork at the prestigious Villa La Fontaine, an honor that filled me with immense gratitude.
Antibes, with its rich artistic heritage, has long been a source of inspiration for renowned artists, writers, and sculptors. The likes of Picasso, Nikos Kazantzakis, and F. Scott Fitzgerald sought solace and creative nourishment within its charming embrace. Walking through the streets of Antibes, one could almost perceive the lingering echoes of their creative energy, igniting a profound sense of awe and reverence.
During my stay, I felt as if I had stepped into the pages of a fairy tale. Immersed in a world where artistic expression thrived, I found myself captivated by the endless possibilities that surrounded me. Every moment was infused with vibrant energy as if the very air held whispers of artistic brilliance.
Within the walls of Villa La Fontaine, I surrendered myself to the creative process. Inspired by the beauty of Antibes and the legacy of the artists who came before me, I poured my heart and soul onto the canvas, translating my emotions and experiences into visual form. Each brushstroke carried the essence of the city, its history, and the creative force that permeated its air.
Now, as a testament to my time in Antibes, three of my paintings have found a permanent home in the esteemed collection of the city. It fills me with immense pride and joy to know that my art will forever be intertwined with the artistic tapestry of Antibes, becoming a part of its vibrant cultural heritage.
My stay in Antibes was not only a transformative artistic journey but also a personal one. It instilled in me a renewed sense of purpose and a deep appreciation for the power of artistic inspiration. The memories and experiences gained during that remarkable summer will forever hold a special place in my heart, fueling my creative endeavors for years to come.
As I reflect on my time in Antibes, I am humbled by the opportunity I was given and forever grateful for the artistic sanctuary that embraced me. May the city of Antibes continue to be a muse for generations to come, fostering the creative spirit and captivating the hearts of artists who seek its magical embrace.
Do you have a role model that you've drawn inspiration from when creating your art?
Immersing myself in the vast realm of art museums, I have been privileged to witness the works of countless masters. The sheer brilliance and diversity of artistic expression make it challenging for me to choose a single role model. Each artist I encounter possesses a unique greatness that resonates deeply within me, leaving me in awe of their talent and creativity.
Among the subjects that captivate my artistic spirit, horses hold a special place in my heart. Their grace, strength, and symbolism have inspired me to embark on a series of paintings dedicated to these magnificent creatures. In particular, I find inspiration in the works of two American Western painters, Mark Maggiori and Jason Rich.
Mark Maggiori's ability to capture the essence of the American West, the spirit of the wild frontier, and the connection between humans and horses is truly remarkable. His bold brushwork and masterful use of color create a sense of adventure and freedom that speaks to my own artistic aspirations.
Likewise, Jason Rich's depictions of horses exude a profound sense of energy and movement. Through his dynamic compositions and attention to detail, he brings these majestic creatures to life, evoking a sense of reverence and admiration.
While these artists serve as a source of inspiration for my horse series, it is important to note that my own artistic voice remains unique and distinct. I draw upon the techniques and styles that resonate with me, infusing them with my personal perspective and emotions. In doing so, I aim to pay homage to the beauty and spirit of horses while forging my own artistic path.
By incorporating elements of Mark Maggiori's and Jason Rich's artistic approaches into my work, I hope to channel the spirit of the American West and the deep connection between humans and horses. As I explore this subject matter, I strive to capture the essence of these magnificent creatures, to convey their power, grace, and the profound emotions they evoke.
While I may not have a singular role model, I am immensely grateful for the wealth of artistic inspiration I have encountered in my museum visits. Each artist I encounter contributes to my growth and development, shaping my artistic vision and pushing the boundaries of my creativity. With every brushstroke, I strive to honor the artistic legacy that has come before me while forging a path uniquely my own.
What are the main themes and subjects of your paintings?
I find myself constantly flooded with a multitude of ideas, making it challenging to hone in on a single topic consistently. The vast expanse of my creative mind knows no bounds as I explore various subjects in my artwork. Lately, my artistic endeavors have revolved around capturing the captivating beauty of animals, cacti, and birds. These subjects have ignited a spark within me, compelling me to portray their unique essence on the canvas.

Being a part of these esteemed events brings me immense joy and fulfillment.
Furthermore, I am eagerly preparing a large-scale painting for an upcoming competition in New York. This opportunity allows me to challenge myself and push the boundaries of my artistic abilities.
This summer, I have the privilege of returning to an art residency in Antibes, where I will be collaborating with other talented artists. During my time there, I will be focusing on expanding my Sea Birds series, delving deeper into the captivating world of avian artistry. I am excited to immerse myself in this creative journey and see where it takes me.
What do you hope to accomplish this year, both in terms of career goals and personal life?
I am filled with enthusiasm and determination as I have two distinct visions that I am eager to bring to life on a grand canvas. It would be truly remarkable to materialize these ideas this year and share them with the world. I am deeply committed to realizing these creative visions, pouring my heart and soul into their execution. The prospect of unveiling these artworks to a wider audience fills me with anticipation and a sense of fulfillment. I am dedicated to making this year a transformative one for my artistic journey and leaving an indelible mark on the art world with these captivating creations.
